Types of Social Security Disability Programs

There are two main types of Social Security Disability Programs. Tonya A. Fedewa, PLC can help you determine whether you qualify for one or both of these programs.  

In order to be eligible for either benefit, you must have a medically-determinable condition, which may be either physical or mental. The condition must last at least 12 consecutive months, or is likely to last for 12 consecutive months, or result in death. 

Social Security Disability Insurance Benefits (DIB):
  • Available for those who are blind or disabled 
  • In order to be eligible for this benefit you must have earned enough credits during your working years, and become disabled within a certain period after you last worked.  
SSI or Social Security Income
  • Available for those who are disabled, and have limited assets and resources. 
  • Claimants do not need to be insured through Social Security to receive SSI benefits. 
  •  Available for disabled children.  
  • It must be determined that the disability began within a certain time period, after you last worked.

What to Do When Filing Your SSD Application

Your application must contain:
  • Personal information - full name, Social Security number, date of birth, spousal information
  • Financial information - including bank's routing number, account number, your earnings, and your work history
  • Medical information -I will need contact information for any medical providers that have treated you. You will need to have their names, addresses, and telephone numbers.
  • Prescriptions: You will need to have the name, dosage, and frequency.  
  • We will need detailed information about your disability. In other words, you will have to be very specific about any and all limitations that you have, whether they are physical or mental.
